When buying strawberries, consumers pay particular attention to freshness, taste, consistency and origin. The Inspire strawberry meets all these expectations. The strawberry, from Dutch soil, has a superior taste; deliciously full and sweet, but also juicy which makes for a delicious taste experience. In addition, she is also a gem to behold: beautiful deep red in color, with a natural sheen and fresh green crown. The uniform fruits ensure that each strawberry gives a consistent taste experience with every bite. Lastly, the variety has a significantly better shelf life, thus guaranteeing freshness. For growers, the Inspire strawberry is a dream come true. They are not only excited about the winning product characteristics but also about the production performance. Rick van Koppen of Kwekerij ‘t Woudt has been a member of The Greenery for many years and, with the purchase of a new 2-hectare site, is betting on further expansion of production acreage, made possible by Inspire’s favorable labor characteristics. Also Jan van Meer (Meerfruit) is positive and tells: “The Inspire strawberry provides a labor efficiency of more than 15% in my growing farm.” Lilian (Kwekerij Rijnland) adds: “Inspire strawberries also have high disease tolerance. In addition, the variety has a consistent harvest pattern with exceptionally high picking performance. This is reflected in the very high percentage of Class I fruit (> 95%). In addition, it is also suitable for robotic harvesting.”
With Inspire, The Greenery is not only establishing a high-quality variety in the strawberry market, but also setting a new standard in sustainability.
Today’s growers have access to renewable energy sources and use cogeneration plants to produce electricity, sell it and benefit from the heat that is released. All growers recirculate water with fertilizer and use organic pesticides.
All Inspire growers are certified to the standard of On the way to PlanetProof (more stringent than Global Gap), most growers also have Nurture and Leaf to supply UK retailers.
For our cultivation expert, Klaas de Jager, the Inspire variety is the culmination of years of development work together with our partner Plant Science.
Klaas explains, “In early 2016, we started developing a cultivation concept of Low Chill varieties at The Greenery trial site at Botany for a 4-year trial period. In 2019, the cultivation concept was ready and Inspire came out of this cultivation concept as the best performing variety!”
“In 2020, we entered the market with the first commercial Inspire strawberries. The reception to this was so good that we continued to scale up by connecting more growers in the following years.”
