CHARACTERISTICS

CONSUMER

Grower relationship manager Marco Meijer (The Greenery) explains: “We are seeing increasing consumer interest in raspberries. The number of consumers purchasing raspberries annually is rising significantly, and the quantity bought per consumer is also increasing.” The volume of raspberries at The Greenery is growing in line with this demand. To supply the market with the best possible fruit, The Greenery, together with its growers, has been investing considerable effort for some time in developing new soft fruit varieties. Based on the positive experiences from the past year, part of this expansion will include Lagorai.

COMMERCIAL SUCCESS FOR RETAILERS

The Lagorai raspberries, the largest and sweetest in the Netherlands, have rightfully secured a permanent place on the shelves. The demand for this variety is steadily increasing; even a major Dutch retailer has now embraced this variety. According to independent research by Normec, Lagorai surpasses the established standard for raspberries in terms of taste and shelf life.

SUSTAINABLE CULTIVATION

Since 2021, The Greenery has been cultivating Lagorai raspberries under solar panels with grower Piet Albers. “The consumer gets a quality product, and the solar panels provide green energy for as many as 800 households. This dual function benefits both the environment and my raspberries, as raspberries grow best in partial shade,” says Piet. “Additionally, they are protected from direct sunlight, hail, and other extreme weather conditions.” This allows supermarkets to position themselves with the choice of Dutch and sustainably grown raspberries.

TRENDS

Supermarket scan data (Nielsen IQ) shows that over the past five years, the soft fruit category continues to grow both in revenue and volume. Additionally, we see an increasing demand for healthy and flavorful snacks. Raspberries, although a niche product, can greatly benefit from this trend. Their sweet, candy-like taste makes them popular with consumers looking for a healthy alternative to sweets. This presents opportunities for growers to invest in raspberries and for customers to expand their assortment. In this way, raspberries strengthen their niche position and appeal to a broader audience. The challenge lies in maintaining quality and taste during production scaling, and this is precisely where the Lagorai raspberry fits in perfectly!
